The method involves providing a calibration standard for a drive train (2). Data (7) is recorded during a cycle of a user of a vehicle. An optimized calibration is calculated and stored based on the data and/or the calibration standard. The optimized calibration is utilized for the next cycle. The data are recorded at predetermined operating points. The optimized calibration for different users and/or different vehicles are evaluated and/or compared. The data of the vehicle are transmitted to a computer (13) through a mobile device (12). The data comprise engine speed, engine load, coolant temperature and status of components of the exhaust gas post-treatment. An independent claim is also included for a device for optimizing fuel consumption of a drive train of a vehicle.
