The establishment of traceability to national standards for high pulsed-current measurements from 1 kA to greater than 60 kA has long been a difficult situation facing users of resistance welding equipment and circuit breaker current measurement equipment. With proper planning, test equipment selection, and using NIST calibrated measurement standards, the traceability of pulsed-current measurements has been achieved. The use of precision Rogowski coils and current transformers assure that excellent agreement is obtained while transitioning between steady-state sinusoidal measurements and the pulsed current measurements. The paper presents a traceability path of measurements made in the laboratory directly to NIST standards. Methods to assure consistent measurements between calibration intervals are presented.
