This paper presents an initial modelling study into predicting defects which can occur in fibre optic cables. Birefringence in fibre optic cables occurs within optic fibers during the fabrication process of submarine cables. Modelling thisfabrication process requires predictive tools that can model heat transfer, solidification and thermal stress analysis in a coupled manner. Results are shown for a number of fabrication operating scenarios. Another area of interest to industry ismicrobending and the effects that different coating arrangements can have on this phenomena. This paper will outline some initial work using computational mechanics in this area.
