1995 saw the Brunswick Lead Smelter, cast over100,000 tonnes of lead and lead alloys. This represented a 33percent increase over the previous best year. This record was theresult of the successful implementation of many projects aimedat process intensification. This paper discusses three such projects.In the sinter the sinter plant, it was recognized that optimumblast furnace throughput relied on the production of high qualitysinter. To help produce better sinter, improved data collectiontechniques were developed giving operators and engineers newtools for process control. Along with sinter quality, additionaloxygen enrichment in the blast furnace was found to increasethroughput as well as smooth variations in furnace operation.Finally, the combination of increased oxygen enrichment andimproved lance design, have almost doubled capacity in the leadsoftening process; previously the refinery bottleneck.
