From Al, Cu, Si and Mg elemental powders and using a high energy mill (attritor), an AISI 2014 Al alloy was obtained and characterized. Mechanical alloying (MA) method was optimized, and obtained powders were die compacted at 300 MPa. Green samples were subsequently hot extruded from 500°C with a reduction rate of 25:1. An optimization of heat treatments (solubilizing and aging) was made in order to obtain the best mechanical properties and good microstructural homogeneity. Finally, materials in as extruded and heat treated conditions were evaluated through their mechanical properties. Microstructural study, made using optical and scanning electron microscopy, shows a good homogeneity of the alloying elements.
