The American Cancer Society reported that 20 000 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the US in 2006.~1 In fact, ovarian cancer is known to cause more deaths in the US than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.~2 Surgical removal of the cancerous mass combined with a combination of platinum and taxane chemotherapy is the gold standard for the treatment of this cancer. However, despite advances in both chemotherapy and surgery, the survival rate for women with advanced ovarian cancer has not changed over the last four decades.
