Within the past decade parameterization of gravity-wave drag has come into widespread use as a means of alleviating systematic errors in simulations made with general circulation models and mechanistic models of the middle atmosphere. In this paper gravity-wave parameterization is reviewed from the perspective of the role it plays in modelling the large-scale circulation of the atmosphere. It is shown that the response to the force associated with parameterized gravity waves can be explained qualitatively in terms of the downward control theory recently pro-posed by Haynes et al. (1992).
