The HIRLAM 3 project

The High Resolution Limited Area Modelling (HIRLAM) project was initiated in 1985 by the Nordic weather services. At this time Aksel Wiin-Nielsen was director of the Danish Meteorological Institute and he strongly supported the HIRLAM project from the start. It began as a model development effort and the first project group was stationed at the Danish Meteorological Institute in Copenhagen. The Dutch and Irish weather services soon joined, and at the termination of the HIRLAM 1 project in Copenhagen a complete numerical forecasting system for a limited area had been developed. To continue the successful cooperation a new project, HIRLAM 2, was started but now the research groups were stationed in their home countries and the development work was organized into subgroups. The operational running of the HIRLAM model was done in each country separately but for research and development the co-operation still continued. During HIRLAM 2 much effort was put into getting operationally running HIRLAM systems going and the intense development which had taken place over the first years in HIRLAM 1 was now progressing at a slower pace. To intensify the cooperation and to obtain funding for extensive travelling between the HIRLAM members an application was sent to the Human Capital and Mobility programme of the European Community. Also the French weather service joined HIRLAM and with a successful outcome of the HCaM application the HIRLAM 3 project was formed. At this time also the Spanish weather service became interested in running HIRLAM operationally and they are participating in the HIRLAM 3 project under a special agreement of co-operation.
