An overload failure of a dental prosthesis: A 3D finite element nonlinear contact analysis

The peak strains obtained from this contact analysis exceed the uniaxial yield and ultimate strains for human cortical bone. The high strains predicted by this contact analysis and the correlation between the high strains and sites of boneresorption in the actual clinical case might give an indication of the mechanism of bone overload around oral implants. The analysis also shows the need for detailed models (e.g., 3D contact analysis) which can capture the peak strains generated in theinterface. The peak strains increased by a factor of two in the case of no bonding between the bone and the implant. Also, in the non-bonded case, varying the coefficient of friction from 0.003 to 0.3 did not result in a significant change in straindistribution.
