The optical properties of the incommensurate [N(CH3)4]2MCl4 crystal are studied. From birefringence measurements according to Senarmont's method (A=633 nm), the influence of uniaxial mechanical stress on the modulated structure is investi-gated. The investigations of the optical indicatrix revealed the pulsing character of its deformation and its rotation in the long-period commensurate regions. Investi-gations of the small-angle light scattering allowed us to conclude that it is connected with the scattering on phason.
