These results indicated that mutation breeding can be used to improve the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of tobacco. The mutation breeding programme showed that some traits in the Bursa-18000 tobacco variety can be improved, since the selected mutants were characterized by blue mould resistance. In addition, some other morphological and agronomic traits were improved, including a higher yield per unit area, a higher plant height, a higher number of leaves per plant and a higher sugar content.
