The Mobile Spectroscopic Analysis System is a suite of three compact analytical instruments currently under development. It is designed to provide rapid, full-spectrum analysis of samples in the field with little or no sample perceptron. The instruments will be linked to a common sample-handling system and controlled by a single workstation, which will combine information from all three instruments to improve the detection performance of the system and resolve ambiguities. The instruments include: (1) laser time-of-flight atomic mass spectrometer (elemental and isotopic analysis), (2) laser time-of-flight molecular mass spectrometer (molecular analysis), and (3) laser heated cavity atomic emission spectrometer (elemental analysis). The instruments provide overlapping detection capability for many substances of interest. It is expected that the use of data from multiple instruments will improve the reliability of the instruments and reduce the false-positive rate significantly.
