This paper discusses the development of a high speed inspection system to measure the width and height of manufactured prismatic parts. The device was developed by faculty and staff at Carnegie Mellon University in conjunction with the Standard Horsenail Corporation (of New Brighton, PA) for measurement of Woodruff keys. A Woodruff key is a small, prismatic piece of metal used to lock drive shafts into pulleys or gears. The device must measure the maximum height and maximum width of the Woodruff key, and eject keys that are out-of-specification from the part stream. The allowable deviation for these parts is ±0.003" on height, and ±0.0005" on width. The minimum required inspection rate is two parts per second.
