Although surface coating distribution is an important design variable for cementless femoral stems, there is no clear consensus on the optimal distribution. We conducted experiments to investigate the effects of varying the surface coating distribution on stress shielding and relative motion. Proximal stress shielding and distal relative motion varied with bonding distribution in a competing manner. The experimental trends compared well with finite element analyses (FEA). Both the experiment and the FEA demonstrate that bonding of the stem to the endosteal surface of the cortical diaphysis is required for overall stability.
