Caisson type seawall is utilized for the seawall constructed in deep seaarea. To prevent leakage of backfill material through gaps between thecaissons, the joint plates made of rubber or PVC (polyvinyl chloride) areinstalled. However, there is no design method of the joint plates.Accordingly, breakage of the joint plates and leakage of backfill throughthe gaps have frequently occurred, resulting in the settlement failure ofbackfill. To prevent this failure, we have developed a new design methodto determine the joint plate specification. Moreover, we conducted aseries of hydraulic experiments to verify this design method.
