(1923) MEANINGFUL EXTRACURRICULAR STUDENTS' ACTIVITIES NOT ONLY FOR BEGINNER TEACHERS - SURVEY ANALYSIS OF COHERENCY OF TEACHERS' PRESENTNESS DURING THE STUDENTS' FREE TIME

In this paper, I introduce the result of a non-representative survey from different European countries on the effectiveness of teachers' presence out of the classroom, but still, within the walls of the school, namely, during recess. Many health and education experts argue that recess might be a necessary activity for development, and therefore parents have begun to advocate for more recess time. Previous research shows that quality daily recess-time is a necessary component of the curriculum that enables students to develop physical competence, health-related fitness, self-responsibility, and that it widens their interests and their enjoyment of physical activity, so that they can be physically and mentally active for a lifetime. But what is the function of teachers in organizing and leading these kinds of activities? How effectively can they plan the content of this time spent out of the classroom? In this piece I document results of a questionnaire that shows the importance of active and apprehensive presence of teachers during the students' free time or recess-time in school. Teachers' attendance without valuable and meaningful content hinders students’ enjoyment of otherwise useful recess activities. This paper is vital for beginner teachers, who concentrate mostly on their subject-based instruction at the beginning of their professional careers.
