In this paper, we present and discuss a student profiling system conceived to be integrated in anartificial tutor especially designed and developed for helping teaching the Portuguese language tochildren aged 4 to 5 years. Our basic goal was to provide a set of mechanisms that dispose to anartificial tutor the ability to adapt automatically to the learning sessions (reading and writing)established in the method of Cartilha Maternal of 'Joao de Deus' to student learning needs,contributing to a more effective and personalized support to classes and individual plans of learning -one specific learning plan for one specific student. Using Markov chains, it was possible to create thebasic structures for the establishment of student usage profiles, checking their variation according tothe different perspectives of analysis and learning objectives established previously by a teacher.Thus, we will expose the main characteristics and features of this profiling system, showing how itworks and how it can be used to establish and maintain student learning profiles and helping teachersto prepare better lecturing plans and follow students dynamically accordingly to current learning needsand challenges.
