Web 2.0 technologies have presented new opportunities for developing diverse online environmentsand enhancing interactivity, participation and feedback between diverse groups of authors andreaders. In particular, blogs and social networking sites have provided new opportunities andincentives for personal writing. For new migrants to Australia, blogs represent a virtual space wherethey can share knowledge in their home language, form communities and construct identities inresponse to the challenges of an environment vastly different to their original homelands. As the useof blogs among these new migrants increases, it is important to gain a deeper understanding of thepotential they offer for the maintenance of home languages and culture, the mediation of newexperiences and the construction of new identities. The aim of this research is to highlight a frameworkfor analyzing blogs that takes account of the multimodal nature of blogs as well as the characteristicsthat make them 'spaces' where choices about content construct aspects of 'multiple selves' (D?ring2002).
