Contractors are responsible for the overall success of delivering the owner's physical development within the constraints of cost, time, quality and safety requirements. Contractors must increasingly improve themselves accountable for the construction environment since most contributing project delay factors were raised from the contractor. This research was carried out with the objectives to identify the contractor related factors contributing to the construction project delay, to identify the skill competencies for contractors to overcome construction project delay, and to study the relationship among the contractor's competencies as it relates to overcome construction project delay. This research study focused on the five competencies namely financing skill, managerial skill, communication skill, people management skill, technology management skill and followed by identification of the elements for each competency. The quantitative research approach was used with 51 G7 contractors participated in answering the questionnaires. Data were then analyzed using SPSS tool. Results showed that the top three project delay factors were conflicts between contractor and other parties rework due to errors during construction, ineffective planning and scheduling of project. Meanwhile, managerial skill, financing skill, and people management skill were identified as the key competencies for contractors. The key elements for each competency and their relative importance were also determined.
