We present an efficient method for the dynamic finite element (FE) simulation of large jointed structures with local contact nonlinearities at the example of an academic model and an automotive frontend component. After stating of the influence of contact nonlinearities, we address the transient solution of the nonlinear equations of motion. Here, the dimension of the system constitutes a numerical bottleneck leading to a high numerical effort. Therefore, we employ a model order reduction method based on the Galerkin projection of the complete domain onto a low-dimensional basis to speed up the solution significantly. These low-dimensional sub-spaces are obtained by augmenting an eigenmode basis by basis vectors which accommodate the locality of the contact.
