Rapid sample preparation of viable bacteria directly from blood specimens

Concentration and purification of bacteria from initial sample is a challenging problem that must be addressed for rapid downstream diagnostics. Our approach combines preferential lysis of mammalian cells with a series of centrifugation steps. Device design, surface properties, and solution chemistry are key parameters to control. Pellets can be analyzed directly cells are alive for downstream antibiotic susceptibility confirmation by standard methods and are clean enough for PCR analysis.
