In present paper, an analytical based approach is presented for optimum placement and sizing of distributed generation (DG) units in a balanced radial distribution system. The proposed formulations are based on the fact that when a DG is placed at a node, the current in all the branches lying between root node and the node under consideration is reduced which in turn reduces the loss in the system. The proposed method considers the variation in load levels and hence aims to minimize energy losses in the system by placement of DG. For maximum energy loss saving, the sizing of DG units is obtained by classical optimization technique. The developed method needs the solution of base case load flow only for execution. The proposed method has been applied on 15-bus test radial distribution system and it has been realized that a substantial active energy loss saving can be achieved by placement of DG unit in the distribution networks by using proposed analytical approach.
