Novel outside facility management technology for maintenance and inspection work using MMS

NTT maintains and inspects an enormous number of outdoor facilities including utility poles and optical cables to ensure the stable provision of FTTH services to customers. However, it is important that we secure maintenance personnel as the working age population decreases, and improved work efficiency is required. We are working on the development of 3D facility management technology to enable us to continue operations efficiently and accurately even if the number of workers decreases in the future. By this technique, which can extract facility 3D models from the point cloud data acquired by a mobile mapping system (MMS), we believe that inspection work can be substituted on the desk. In this paper, we propose a method for assessing the health of each facility by the 3D modeling of utility poles and cables from 3D point cloud data acquired using an MMS. In addition, we clarify the best approach to use in the proposed method.
