Polyethylene (PE) pipe life time prediction was carried out by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) micro spectroscopy imaging and TG-DTA analysis. FTIR imaging method was employed to evaluate the variation of oxidation degradation of PE pipes before and after accelerated degradation test under the hot air exposure at 120°C. From the results, it was found that the thermally oxidized functional groups and high-order structural change were observed by high-temperature degradation. In addition, this result indicated the same tendency of TG-DTA analysis for the surface and inside area of the specimen. Therefore, it is suggested that FTIR micro spectroscopy transmission and ATR imaging method play an important role to clarify the degradation mechanism of the PE pipe.
