In a career spanning six decades of active work, Prof. Howard C. "Pat" Curtiss, Jr. (March 17, 1930 - Sept. 19, 2012) became an internationally recognized authority on helicopter stability, control, and aerodynamics and a leader in rotorcraft education. This paper briefly outlines the major features of his technical career, focusing on five major research areas. The paper is intended both as a tribute to his accomplishments and legacy and to highlight the continuing importance of research and engineering development that were the focus of his work.
