In a career spanning six decades of active work, Prof. Howard C. “Pat” Curtiss, Jr. (March 17, 1930 - Sept. 19,rn2012) became an internationally recognized authority on helicopter stability, control, and aerodynamics and a leaderrnin rotorcraft education. This paper briefly outlines the major features of his technical career, focusing on five majorrnresearch areas. The paper is intended both as a tribute to his accomplishments and legacy and to highlight therncontinuing importance of research and engineering development that were the focus of his work.
