We have developed a coated optical fiber connection method with cost-effective cleaving and novel coating removal techniques. We developed a cost-effective cleaver by changing from an electroactuation cleaving method to a manual technique, and we obtained coated fibers with mirror endfaces although we sometimes obtained endfaces with hackle and scarring. As regards coating removal, we found that a coating removal component that had a circular cone with blades was more effective over a wide temperature range.
