FLOW CONTROL IN THE WAKE OF A BLUNT TRAILING EDGE PROFILED BODY USING DIELECTRIC BARRIER DISCHARGE PLASMA ACTUATORS
A flow control approach involving distributed forcing of the flow in the wake of a blunt trailing edge profiled body, for reduction of the drag associated with the von Karman vortex street has been investigated experimentally. Control actuation has been applied using an array of dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators across the span, with a spanwise wavelength matching that of the dominant secondary wake instability. Using an adequate level of actuation, the flow control technique causes elongation of the vortex formation region across the span, accompanied by significant base pressure recovery and reduction of the mean and fluctuating components of drag. The results of proper orthogonal decomposition analysis of the wake flow suggest that the favourable effects of the flow control technique are due to disorganization of the vortex street through intensification of secondary instabilities.
