Variations in Strains and Treatment Outcomes of Lactococcus lactis and Streptococci Recovered from Cases of Bovine Mastitis

Environmental mastitis has become a major problem, particularly in well-managed herds that have successfully controlled contagious pathogens. Streptococci have frequently been reported as a leading cause of both clinical and subclinical mastitis throughout the world. Lactococcus lactis, which until recently was thought to be non-pathogenic, has been increasingly isolated in association with cases of bovine mastitis. The ability to identify strains using pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of causative bacterial species is an essential tool for epidemiological investigations. The objective of this study was to evaluate strain variations and selected treatment outcomes of clinical cases of bovine mastitis caused by Lactococcus lactis lactis and streptococci.
