A comprehensive, full chain and US meat sector economic analysis of the adoption of Improvest~R by the US pork industry

Improvest~R (gonadotropin releasing factor analog- diphtheria toxoid conjugate) is a product which allows pork producers to immunize male pigs to reduce unpleasant odors and thereby eliminate castration. This product is administered by injection twiceduring the life of the male pig. The first injection is given after nine weeks of age and allows the immunized male pig to express its naturally efficient growth potential resulting in substantial feed savings per pound of gain compared to physically castrated males. The second dose is given at least four weeks after the first dose and slaughter must take place no earlier than three weeks post second dose or later than ten weeks post second dose. After the second dose is given, the male pig begins to eat substantially more per pound of gain and increases the level of fat in the carcass to a desirable level for primal cut characteristics. Optimal marketing strategies take these factors into account to time the injections and harvest of the animals to maximize profits within the constraints of the periods listed.
