Oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates have significant roles in a diverse set of biological processes, including viral and bacterial infections, cell growth and proliferation, cell-cell communication, as well as immunoresponse.1 However, preparation of glycoconjugates is hampered by difficulties related to obtain pure oligosaccharides. The carbohydrate synthesis, based on the orthogonal protective/deprotective pathway, involves cumbersome multistep sequences to introduce modifications at a specified position. Stereo- and regio-selectivity of biocatalysts could be a key approach in to provide important alternative or complementary tools to the chemical synthesis. In this context, lipases-assisted oligosaccharide preparation has been reported. In fact, pyranoside building blocks, bearing a strategically positioned free hydroxyl group, were achieved by a chemoenzymatic strategy in order to prepare biologically relevant di-and trisaccharides.
