Lignocellulosic biomass can be utilized to produce ethanol, a promising energy source for the limited crude oil. The major structural barriers for the biodegradation of cellulose are its association with the lignin and hemicelluloses, crystalline, degree of polymerization, and surface area. Pretreatment methods open the structure of the potential cellulose substrate. The purpose of the pretreatment is to remove lignin and hemicelluloses, reduce the cellulose crystalline, and increase the porosity of the materials. During the enzymatic hydrolysis, cellulose is degraded by the cellulases to reducing sugars that can be fermented by yeast or bacteria to ethanol.
