Validating Changes in Expression of Candidate Regulatory Genes for Mastitis Control

Streptococcus uberis are prevalent bacteria associated with mastitis, that has been recovered from 6-18% of mastitis cases across the world. Common mastitis control and treatment methods limit infections but are not completely effective. Identifying potential genetic markers and/or functional genes and pathways are important steps to finding novel control strategies. Recently, we used a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify polymorphisms associated with Streptococcus uberis shedding patterns, signs of inflammation, and time to cure (SCC <200,000 cells/ml and no Strep, uberis) (Siebert et al., 2018; unpublished observations). Polymorphisms within HECTD4 and SND1 were associated with Strep, uberis shedding cycles. Both genes are involved in ubiquitin mediated protein degradation pathways.
