Effect of Denagard~R Liquid Concentrate on plasma and milk concentrations of tiamulin in sows

With the approval of Denagard~R for use in swine weighing more than 250 lbs, swine producers and veterinarians are interested in knowing the potential for periparturient tiamulin therapy to improve sow and piglet health and performance. Previous European trials have shown that tiamulin hydrogen fumarate (THF) is excreted in milk from sows receiving 20 mg/kg water-soluble THF orally and that concentrations of THF in milk may be high enough to be of therapeutic value in their suckling piglets against abroad spectrum of respiratory and systemic bacterial pathogens (Mycoplasma spp., Streptococcus suis, Hemophilus parasuis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoni-ae). Other antimicrobial products approved for use in lactating sows have been shown to benefit sow performance, piglet performance, or both. Use of Denagard Liquid Concentrate (LC) in lactating sows for the purpose of treating their suckling pigs is convenient and seems likely to be effective, thus offering a viable therapeutic option for control of bacterial pathogens which colonize the piglet during the suckling period. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of various concentrations of Denagard LC in drinking water on concentrations of THF in plasma and milk of lactating sows.
