Toolkit for regional success

In December of 2009, the Bethany Swine Health Services (BSHS) veterinarians attended an "Area Regional Control of PRRS" meeting with the goal of learning more about controlling PRRS within an area. In the back of our minds, we were thinking of a 15,000 sow system that was previously PRRS positive and unstable. This system would be importing a large number of PRRS negative gilts into the area in less than a year due to a change in genetics. This Area Regional Control (ARC) project was really born outof a desire to keep these incoming gilts PRRS negative in an area that was traditionally PRRS positive and unstable. With the exception of two long-term PRRS negative herds within the defined area, we had learned to live with PRRS. It was time to fight back!
