A sensor unit which consists of a 40-kHz ultrasound transmitter and receivers is installed under an existing bed mattress. The ultrasound transmitted through an aperture of the unit is reflected on the mattress' undersurface, and is modulated by the slight vibration of the undersurface which is caused by heartbeat. The heart sound is extracted by a band-pass-filter.
