PROMOTING PSYCHOLOGY IN A COMMUNITY HEALTH CONTEXT

For 10 years, Michigan psychologists have been volunteering their time at local community health fairs to emphasize the important association between positive mental health and good physical health. At these fairs, which are free and open to the public, psychologists hand out information pertaining to mental health. They also offer a brief depression screening which includes a private discussion of results and professional referrals when appropriate. Participation in these health fairs directly supports the American Psychological Association's promotion of the importance of the mind/body connection. This article describes the project, its successes and limitations, and its benefits to both the public and the psychologists involved.
