PSYCHOLOGY OF SCIENCE: NOTES ON STARTING A NEW DISCIPLINE WITHIN PSYCHOLOGY

The psychology of science and technology is a new discipline within psychology dedicated to study the thought, behavior and related social activities of scientists. This new field of endeavor has embraced numerous psychological perspectives and applications. Studies on the psychology of science date back to 1874, when Francis Galton published English Men of Science: Their Nature and Nurture. Since then, we have seen many publications on scientists' psychological world. Outstanding books in the psychology of science have appeared (Feist, 2006; Gholson, Shadish, Neimeyer, & Houts, 1989; Mahoney, 1976; Shadish & Fuller, 1994; Simonton, 1988), and many articles relevant to the field are scattered in journals in psychology, sociology, scientometrics, philosophy and communication, This critical mass justifies an organized, unified, identifiable group of psychologists dedicated to this field, but this has not yet happened. Some psychologists who identified themselves with the psychology of science felt they were responding to in the 2006 publication by Feist.
