We have investigated the effects of SiN_x overcoat on bulk magnetic properties and recording performances in perpendicular media. Difference in recording parameters between disks with SiN_x and carbon overcoats is mainly due to the difference in writeability caused by coercivity change during SIN_x overcoat deposition. The bulk magnetic properties of the cap in the recording layer are affected by the reaction with silicon and nitrogen. Although SiN_x overcoat changes writeability, it does not alter the intrinsic dependence of recording parameters on writeabilty.
