An implementation of rectangular infinite absorbing boundaries for acoustic simulation

One of the challenges in numerical simulations is the implementation of ideal absorbing boundaries. Sub-optimal methods that utilize asymptotic expansion techniques such as infinite boundary domain or numerical suppression techniques such as perfectly matched layers technique (PML) are widely used. Generally the infinite boundary outperforms the PML method. However, the PML is geometrically robust while the infinite boundary is limited to circular envelopes. A rectangular computational domain is preferred over the circular counterpart in many applications in order to reduce the computation domain. In this paper a rectangular infinite boundary technique is proposed and its performance is evaluated. Results are presented in comparison with the conventional circular infinite boundary and PML.
