A Study of Stadium Exit Design on Evacuation Performance

The evacuation of a stadium can be a crucial element to consider when designing a stadium. If something goes wrong during an evacuation it can mean the difference between life and death. Our work examines egress scenarios using simulations and analyzes the impact of stadium exit configuration on evacuation performance. Three scenarios were investigated using two sections of a stadium by varying the number and width of the exits. The results from multiple simulation trials indicate that two unobstructed exits could successfully evacuate the two stadium sections within the expected safe time while one exit could not. It was also determined that the size of the exit can have a significant impact as a single large exit may be more efficient than having two exits due to the reduction of congestion points during the evacuation.
