Catalysts and MEAs from South Africa - The world’s platinum nation moves up the value chain (Abstract)

More than 80% of the world’s known reserves and resources of platinum group metal (PGM) minerals are in South Africa. The country’s mining industry currently provides three quarters of the world’s annual platinum metal consumption. In 2007 the South African Department of Science and Technology initiated an ambitious 15-year programme to create a South African value-added manufacturing industry to supply materials and components into the global hydrogen and fuel cell markets. HySA/Catalysis has been formed within this strategy specifically to develop fuel cell and fuel processing catalysts, as well as MEAs and stacks for low temperature PEFC systems. Five years on, this programme is preparing to launch its first commercial products for adoption in the global fuel cell industry.
