Phosphorus (P) is an essential raw material, which is in its role as one of the major plant nutrients important for global food security. In short term the security of supply is given because there are sufficient P-reserves. However, the P-deposits are concentrated in a small number of countries, which in some cases restrict respectively even prohibit the export or which are considered as politically unstable. At the same time the availability of phosphate rock with low pollutant content is limited. Due to the fact that Germany has no natural P-deposits, the targeted P-recycling of organic waste and residues is becoming more and more important. The optimization of the P-utilization and the reduction of P-losses can make a significant contribution to a sustainable and efficient management of the P-resources. For the substitution of rock phosphates especially the organic flows of the wastewater treatment, biowaste compost and digestate, animal by-products as well as biomass ashes are suitable.
