MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF WASTE LANDFILL DURING AND SUBSEQUENT TO DEPOSITION

The behaviour of fresh waste during the filling operation, in particular the compression, densification and stiffening of layers of waste subsequently buried by additional waste and the stresses acting within a landfill mass has rarely been measured directly. This paper describes the instrumenting and monitoring during and subsequent to filling and completion of an engineered landfill cell at a site in the UK. This work supplements long-term research findings and the development of an empirical landfill settlement model based on existing landfill settlement data.
