Long-term emission and landfilling behaviour of mechanically-biologically pre-treated waste

摘要

Mechanical-biological pre-treatment of residual municipal solid waste prior to landfilling can significantly reduce the emission potential and at the same time improve landfill behaviour. Laboratory investigations show the potential for reductions ofup to 90 percent in organic and inorganic leachate load. The landfill gas production can be reduced in the same range, depending on the kind and extend of the biological treatment phase. The investigations also show that within certain boundary conditions it is possible to achieve high compaction rates, low permeability and significantly reduced gas and water conductivities. This would make it possible to do without the landfill top cover lining system described in the German Technical Instructions onWaste from Human Settlements in favour of an alternative cover system. In addition a gas collection system might not be necessary, if the methane oxidation potential in the soil layer of the top cover system could be used sufficiently.
