The creation of sustainable landfills is a fundamental goal in waste management worldwide, in this case, sustainability is closely tied to the potential of terminating expensive perpetual landfill aftercare. However, objectives of many conventional landfill operations largely focus on the short term prevention of hazards and risks to the environment that are caused by polluted leachate and migrating landfill gas (LFG) as well as on a controlled utilization of the energy provided by extracted LFG.
