It has been observed an increase in theconsumption of antidepressants, and venlafaxine appearsamong the most consumed. Its presence in theenvironment, together with other antidepressants, has beenreported all over the world. Nevertheless, the knowledge inits possible ecotoxic effects is still limited. Therefore, it isimperative to evaluate their impact in the aquaticecosystems. In this context, the effect of venlafaxine in thegrowth of the microalga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitatawas evaluated. The experiments were carried out inagreement to the inhibition test for algae (EC Regulation440/2008, which was based on the OCDE Guideline 201).P. subcapitata was chosen, because it is highly sensitive tocontamination from aquatic environment and it is alsorecommended as a standard organism for ecotoxicity tests.The effect of different concentrations of venlafaxine in thegrowth of the microalgae was evaluated by determining thecontent of chlorophyll in vivo by fluorescence andcomparing to a control culture. Venlafaxine showed tohave toxic effects to P.subcapitata, with EC10 and EC50 of0.9 and 11.0 mg/L, respectively. According to the“Globally harmonized system of classification andlabelling of chemicals (GHS)” (United Nations),venlafaxine can be classified as toxic to the aquaticorganisms.
