For elucidation of the folding processes of the photosynthetic chlorophyll (Chl) proteins, we examined binding constants of peptides and model ligands to Chls. Van der Waals force can give equal or larger contribution to the interaction than the ligand coordination (imidazole, 3.6×10 M ; pyridine; 2.3×10 M ; heptyl nicotinate, 7.2 ×10~4M~1 ). The results were consistent with the binding constants of the peptide motifs of the Chl binding site in a Chl protein.
