Biodegradable polyesters are widely studied for numerous medical and pharmaceutical applications. Chain linking and crosslinking offer new possibilities to modify the properties of degradable polyesters. Chain extenders introduce new functional groups into the polymers, whereas polymers with very high strength or with elastic properties can be obtained by crosslinking. Structural alternatives of the novel polymer families will be introduced and their most interesting specific properties for medical applications discussed.
