Bioactive Glass Granules - A Suitable Bone Substitute Material in the Operative Treatment of Depressed Lateral Tibial Plateau Fractures

Introduction Bone substitute materials have been studied for more than 100 years to be used instead of autogenous bone graft. Bioactive glasses have been successfully used clinically in maxillofacial, oral, dental surgery and bone tumour surgery. So far, there are only few studies concerning the use of bioactive glass granules as a bone substitute material in fresh fractures needing bone grafting, although the use in fractures may represent a new potential clinical application. There is no prospective, randomized study about bioactive glass as a bone substitute material in lateral tibial plateau fractures.
